Who Needs Emissions Testing?

Not sure when or if you need emissions testing? Most vehicles year 1996 and newer require testing every 2 years. However, brand new vehicles won't need to be tested until they are 4 years old. Most vehicles 1995 or older don't need testing. Vehicles 1967 or older do not need testing. Diesel vehicles, electric vehicles, and motorcycles don't need testing.

It's important to keep your address up to date with the Illinois DMV, as you will be sent a notice each time you are due for a new test. If you are due for a test it will coincide with the expiration date of your vehicle license tabs. You will need a passing inspection to purchase your tabs. Don't wait until the last minute or you might not have time for your emission repair, and expired tab tickets are expensive!

Regularly Scheduled Maintenance will keep your Emissions Clean

To all but eliminate the odds of failing your emissions test, stay on top of your oil changes, tune-ups and factory-scheduled maintenance. Some of the most common causes of failure include:

Rich Air-Fuel Mixture - you fuel injectors or oxygen sensor are likely the cause.
Worn Spark Plugs - stay on top of your tune-ups and your spark plugs will always be in good working condition. We'll even check them during your oil changes.
Check Engine Light - if your check engine light is on or is malfunctioning you may fail your test, even if your emissions are clean.
Leaking Gas Caps - replacing a gas cap is fast and easy but you might not be aware that your cap is leaking until you fail your test.
Dirty Air Filter - we check your air filter with every oil change, so this won't be a problem.
Catalytic Converter - if your catalytic converter is damaged it won't properly reduce your toxic emissions.
EVAP System - if your evaporative emission control systems (EVAP) isn't functioning properly or your hoses or vents are leaking you won't pass your inspection.
